Cyber security is a lot more complicated than it used to be. First, we all needed to get more robust programs to manage our defenses. Second, every small to midsized business needs to be current with cyber protections against an ever-changing landscape of cyber threats. So we decided to try the “big gun,” McAfee’s MVision EPO. After three months of testing it, here’s what we found.
The console is nice for a good overview of the overall security and any events that might have occurred. It’s a decent interface overall. But a few issues have come up that need to be addressed:
- We wasted significant time on many false detections. The user installs the program to be alerted to real cyber threats. The program -- not the user -- needs to be the expert.
- Because the program monitors so many different layers and endpoints, it slows down even when installed in a robust system. McAfee needs to optimize this more. If one is using strong hardware and secure networks, slowdowns shouldn’t happen from security scanning.
- MVision EPO doesn’t really have the ability to heal after an event. To us, this is unacceptable. A business’s sensitive data must be recoverable. Period.
Based on our findings and final report, I’m not sure that McAfee’s MVision EPO is the best protection at the
